1998 was a fertile year defined by juggernaut projects from Black Star, Lauryn Hill, Outkast, and others, all of whom synced experimentation with foundational tenets that made the 1990s ferociously groundbreaking.
Out of Oakland, California, a collective known as Hieroglyphics were positioning away from industry control, to helm their own assets in manners more suited to their own marketing self-vision. While artists have certainly went solo prior, this came at a critical juncture for the crew during a spiraling and newfound Internet world. Born out of this independent spirit was the crew’s first official studio album 3rd Eye Vision.
The album spans twenty-two songs, all featuring beats by Domino who manned the lion’s share of production. A-Plus, Opio, Del, Casual, and Phesto also contributed beats. MCs each had their own song, short interludes highlighting their individuality through short verses, a clear espirit de corps statement.
Even among standouts like “Oakland Blackouts” or “At The Helm,” perhaps the most celebrated song off the release is “You Never Knew,” a track that propelled 3rd Eye Vision to #88 on the Billboard Top 200, not an entirely easy feat as a new label competing with the late ‘90s’ abundant onslaught of classic material.

Limited colored vinyl edition in a run of 300 copies of the all new Jazz Spastiks album "Green Street" with People Without Shoes on the mic. Includes all instrumentals!
Funky Spastiks vibes on the beat combined with the unique flow of PWS make this album another classic release in both artists discography. For fans of Jazz Rap a la Jazz Liberatorz, Glad2mecha & Ill Treats or Guru's Jazzmatazz.
Hailing from New Jersey, TCOR's production is a cross between DJ Premier and Prince Paul, combining the gritty kicks and percussive punches of the former with the humor and creative personality of the latter. Whether it's his Lo Bit Beat Tape or the instrumental album She Hate Me, there's an element of grit to his sonic science, one that hints at dusty fingers from many years of diggin' in the crates. (Come to think of it, that's who else TCOR is reminiscent of: Diamond D or Lord Finesse from the Diggin' In The Crates crew.)
He’s been producing music for about 20 plus years and shows no signs of bending his sound for anyone or any trend for that matter. The Custodian produces sample-driven hip hop in an age where the practice is becoming increasingly scarce. Boasting an impressive body of work, TCOR is constantly working on new beats.
