Dj Drinks (aka The Summit) has previously released two acclaimed instrumental lp’s on Soundweight Records ‘Nocturnes and ‘Rift Valley’, along with producing Cappo’s ‘Thousand Word Exodus’ 12” and Melanin 9’s classic ‘Amulets’ 12” for the now defunct Blunted Astronaut Records... and most recently contributing four tracks to Cappo & Cyrus Malachi’s ‘Post Modernism’ lp released on Village Live.
Also as a part of the North London production team Armed Dukes he add’s another two lp’s to his list of credits with their debut lp ‘Quadrant’ released on MUJ and the follow up ‘Calibre’ released last year on We Stay True.
‘Nightline’ is actually his first full length lp under the Dj Drinks moniker and it builds upon the high standard and quality control seen across all his past projects. ‘Nightline’ is a distillation of records, sampled, de constructed and methodically reconstructed using the legendary EMU Systems SP1200 & Emax samplers to create straight forward, emotive & atmospheric instrumentals with a raw, purist, boom bap approach.

After a bad departure from Payroll Records, former in-house producer and Bizzie Boyz member Andreao Heard was furious and a man on mission. He decided to hook up with the hungriest new producer in the camp, a cat from NC named Mark Sparks...
Mark Sparks had a raw and dirty style in contrary to Heard's style which more clean and commercial. Heard and T.R. Raynor came up with a plan to release a compilation album, with Andreao Heard producing one side and Marks Sparks producing the other side to attract a wide range of hip-hop fans. On top of that this would also be the first time Heard would get the chance to work with a new promising rapper named Omniscience!
Once the material was completed they sadly were unable to get the record out to the masses and missed a chance in getting radio play and reaching considerable sales. Shortly after the compilation was released Andreao Heard and Mark Sparks went their own way and became very succesful names in the industry. Andreao Heard went on to produce for the likes of Michael Jackson, Will Smith, The Notorious B.I.G, Ma$e, Lil Kim, Anthony Hamilton and more. Mark Sparks went on to produce the underground classic, Kakalaka Raw and did work for Special Ed, Grand Puba, Redhead Kingpin, Salt N Pepa, Mary J Blige and many more.

Brooklyn's DJ Spinna continues to show the world, there's no shortage of beats from his arsenal. The legendary DJ/Producer returns with another installment of his beat tape series on Redefinition Records. Following 2018's Unpicked Treats Volume 1 & 2 series, his latest tape entitled, "1997 Beat Tape" ascends where 2017's "1996 Beat Tape" left off. This collection boasts production all composed and recorded during the year 1997. Spinna was able to locate the original DAT (digital audio tapes) from over 2 decades ago and provide an authentic look into his production from that era.
Known for being one the greatest producers of sample based music, like his other works to date, the "1997 Beat Tape" only solidifies his legacy as being so advanced without the aid of current software and technology. To many hip hop fans, there's something special about production from the 90's. Some of the characteristics from then still remain a mystery to artists of today, but continue to inspire in 2019. Terms like "boom bap", "raw" "real" and "gritty" get thrown around when describing production trends of that time, but we prefer just call it art or simply music. True artisanship and musicianship is on full display throughout this record. 15 well constructed beats are the perfect vehicle to transport vibes from jazzy to synthy to melodic and funky. When asked about the beat tape, Spinna was quoted saying, "I'm letting go of some more classic boom bap instrumentals. This time a batch of beats made in 1997, straight off the original DAT tape. A few of these are first drafts of beats that were released later on for several artists." There you have it. It doesn't get more genuine than that and straight from the artist. So now go get it!

After making serious noise in the modern funk world, XL Middleton makes a return to the g-funk/hip hop sound that marked his earlier work with "2 Minutes Till Midnight." It’s a funked out, synth-heavy excursion with an equal amount of appeal for modern funksters or the underground legions of g-funk fans that put XL on the map originally. Those familiar with his most recent albums, “Tap Water” and “Things Are Happening,” will recognize the signature synth leads and intricate analog bass lines. Those unfamiliar with Middleton as an MC will find that he challenges standards in the worlds of both underground and mainstream rap, eschewing the backpack as much as the Bentley, falling into a space that few can. XL’s lyricism is cerebral and well-read, yet it’s clear that he comes from a part of the world that relishes khakis, Chuck Taylors & Zapp records.
"2 Minutes Till Midnight" stands firmly rooted in the funk tradition of Los Angeles, showing reverence for the music that inspired it by bringing g-funk legends Kokane & Domino ("Getto Jam") into the fold as guest artists and by featuring album artwork from Joe Cool, who designed the iconic "Doggystyle" album cover for Snoop Dogg. XL's contemporaries, such as labelmates Zackey Force Funk, Moniquea, & I, Ced, also join in and help to remind us that the album is not just a self-indulgent tribute to a bygone era of music. In a world where we all have our respective tastes in music, one artist has managed to remain at the top our lists and top of the food chain. MF DOOM is a name you can't go wrong with. Pop aficionados and underground hip hop purists alike have been far from shy when giving the man his due praise during his 30 year career. If you're collecting vinyl, then it's safe to assume you own at least one of his cult classics like Operation Doomsday, Viktor Vaughn, Danger Doom or MM Food all of which continue to be top performers years after their original release dates. His most popular is 2004's collaboration with Madlib entitled Madvallainy. Madvillainy has cemented DOOM as a legend in the minds of many.
In 2011, Paris based production duo the Union collaborated with Doom for their album, Analogtronics on the single, "Coco Mango". This track would be remixed by DC's, Damu the Fudgemunk for a limited 7" that sold out in two weeks and became an underground smash in it's own right. Being a DOOM and Madvillain fan, Damu took to the opportunity to lay 2 remixes both inspired specifically by Madvillain's track "Rhinestone Cowboy".
The results are commonly dubbed "CoCo Mango Sliced" (power outage mix) and "Coco Mango Diced" (boyscout mix). Coco Mango Sliced enlisted a sharp guest verse from Boston's Insight the Truncator. Fun fact: While producing the remixes, Damu lost power in his studio literally after recording a demo of the the first mix and lost the unsaved be in his MPC. That 2 track demo would become what was published, hence the (power outage mix). Instead of recreating the exact same beat he lost, Damu took the same sample and put a different swing on it, giving us remix number 2 (boyscout mix).
Since its original release, these remixes have become known as "the DOOM record you've never heard" due to it's short shelf life. Though a repress would've made perfect sense in 2011, it's now 2019 and these tracks are finally getting a proper reissue. The cover art was handled by well known artist Joe Buck of De La Soul fame and pays homage to DOOM using his signature hand drawn technique accenting a classic masked photo of Damu the Fudgemunk. Everything about this record screams high quality hip hop.
