FloFilz - Transit (2019)

“Jazz (We've Got)” was the title of the second single from A Tribe Called Quest's iconic album “The Low End Theory”. It was released in 1991, the same year FloFilz was born. Similar to Tribe FloFilz resurrects jazz for a new generation. He has been doing this for a while now and is pretty good at it, as you might know if you are familiar with his previous works “Metronom” and “Cenário”.
In 2019 things have changed. Today jazz is not only about diggin' old records and learning about Bird and Trane. Jazz is very much alive and the city of London has become one of its epicenters. The UK jazz scene is happening because it is deeply connected with hip-hop, soul and club music. A perfect setting for FloFilz. Over the last 18 months, he has collected serious Eurostar miles, heading from Aachen to London - going to gigs, hanging out with musical allies and recording new material.

This is why he calls his new album “Transit“. Through 18 tracks FloFilz translates the current London vibe in his very own style and fashion and I dare to say that “Transit“ may be the best album he has treated us with so far.

Social Deviantz - Essential Mental Nutrients (1996 / 2019)

First time ever vinyl pressing for this incredible (and highly sought after) 1996 album by the Social Deviantz out of Vancouver, Canada. Sounding somewhat like a cross between west coast peers Souls of Mischief and the Pharcyde, DJ Junya's beats create the perfect soundscape for MC's A-Train and Fatbone to display their considerable skills on the mic. Don't sleep on this incredibly dope LP!

Ebbe Funk - Chinchillin' II (2019)

Free Download: tapeinvader.bandcamp.com

Since blessing the world with 2018’s Chinchillin' I, Ebbe Funk has prospered as a smart and insightful producer. His latest EP continues the saga and comes with a gritty, phonk drum inspired but also true mellow sound. The outcome is a dizzy mix of slow jams with atmospheric synthesizers and a cup of sample flips! While "Z-inkkraut" impresses with its pumping bassline and classic boombap drums, "E-rdbeerblätter" sets a dramatic tone through the use of an ominous spheric sample and an out chorus that culminates in Ebbe Funk's vocal flip "there's no surviving". Bringing a soulful touch to the proceedings, the synthesizer-infused track "D-inkel" adds rousing vocal flips from Redman's "Can't Wait" saying "Who got da funk?" .. we know it for sure, Ebbe Funk!

Mndsgn. - Snaxx (2019)

Album cycles come around about once every two years, but Mndsgn, aka Ringgo Ancheta, is constantly making music. He wanted to do justice to his prolific creativity, so rather than let unreleased tracks wither and die on his hard drive, he decided to put out two records ahead of his next studio album, and the concept of Snax was born.

Snax (one 'x') was a tape of remixes, self-released last year.

Snaxx (2 ‘x’s) follows with beat-heavy production including favorites from his hybrid live/DJ shows like “Deviled Eggs” making an appearance. On his Boiler Room TV show Breakfast with Ringgo, he welcomed artists like Anderson .Paak, Knxwledge, Swarvy and Ahnnu to jam and/or converse in his studio. Snaxx has a similar vibe of having friends come visit, an atmosphere Ringgo compares to inviting friends round for dinner and providing “something to chomp on” while preparing the meal. A few of those friends include close collaborators, Pink Siifu and Jon Bap.

Though Mndsgn’s sound always has one foot in the world of hip-hop, it never sticks with a single genre. His 2014 debut Yawn Zen’s dreamy atmospheres and languid beats felt ambient, even psychedelic, and 2016’s Body Wash took a different approach entirely, repurposing influences from 1970s and 1980s boogie and R&B into a conceptual, cosmic epic.

Of his decision to focus on beat-making for this record, Ringgo says, “My own body of work is a conversation within itself. I wanted to reiterate past works prior to singing/songwriting, while continuing to build and keep it interesting.”

The cover art, which Ringgo illustrated himself, was based on a photo taken by Dan Bensch, given to him by Stones Throw’s creative director Jeff Jank. The photo of a Foster's Freeze reminded Ringgo of the donut shop on J Dilla’s Donuts cover.

Mndsgn projects that his next studio album, out in 2020, will be “a little bit moodier than previous works”, but for now Snaxx is more or less about having a good time. “It’s just fun in my eyes — I want to preserve that in my work and my life. We can dive into deep conversation or just bask in each other’s delirium.”

MF Eistee - Moonshine (2019)

Order: dezi-belle.bandcamp.com

The sound of the album reflects the atmosphere of mf eistee’s homestudio, when the moon is coming through the blinds of his roof-light, shining on him and his equipment.

It is fair to say that he met his aim; to capture this mood as a theme and to produce an album leaving no questions unanswered.

Pete Rock - Return Of The SP1200 (Record Store Day 2019 Edition)

Order Vinyl: hhv.de

Pete Rock is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time. His name is oft included in the pantheon of the greatest, alongside DJ Premier, RZA and J Dilla. In addition, Pete has one of the world’s most extensive vinyl collections, the sort of collection who’s size can only be estimated – and that estimate stands in excess of 100,000 LPs. 2019 will see the launch of Pete Rock’s own imprint, Tru Soul Records. And being a lover of all things vinyl, he’s decided that the label’s inaugural release has to be for Record Store Day. Rock’s production forte is the melding of Jazz with early 90s East Coast boom bap, as demonstrated though his work with partner in rhyme CL Smooth. But there was a time before Pete met CL, a time before the world came to know Pete Rock & CL Smooth, a time when Pete was a 19 year old in his basement in Mount Vernon, NY making beats with his SP-1200. These are those beats. Released for the first time ever on “Return Of The SP-1200” debuting on Record Store Day 2019.

Scott Free - Don't Fight the Flavor EP (1993 / 2019)

Here we go with the very first recordings Noiseman produced back in 1993! In the early days Noiseman teamed up with Scott Free and they rocked many shows all over the US. Opening up for names like Naughty by Nature, Das Efx, C-Funk, House of Pain, Gravediggaz, Lighter Shade of Brown, Goodie Mob, Lord Digga, Paris, Lord Finesse, Masta Ace, Assassin, MC Breed, Mystic, Total Devastation, DJ Quick and many more.

Being in an area where G-Funk reigned supreme they never got the props they deserved and it was an uphill battle trying to get their name and music out to the public. Prepare to be blown away because what you will hear is nothing but top notch 1993 hip-hop!

Limited to only 200 copies on black/yellow mixed colour vinyl!

J.Lamotta - Suzume (2019)

Born in Tel Aviv to a family with Moroccan roots, the now Berlin based artist and producer J.Lamotta returns with 'Suzume'; her second album release via Jakarta Records.
The first single ‘Turning’, taken from the forthcoming album is due for release with an accompanying music video on Friday, 15th February.

'Suzume' was recorded across four different studios in Berlin, involving 24 musicians from all around the globe. In contrast to 2017’s 'Conscious Tree' album, which was made using found sounds and samplers, the new album sees J.Lamotta expanding her production repertoire by crafting a warm body of sound, laced with live strings and a horn section provided by her band which have toured together from Berlin to South Korea and Japan over the past three years.

On the featured single ‘Turning’, J.Lamotta comments:
"'Turning' is storytelling. In my mind, the song is a camera that takes in first a wider perspective of humanity and existence, and then zooms in on my personal world, feelings, and love story."

This open and honest approach has roots that can be traced back to Bill Withers, Sun Ra and Dilla, with the triumph of ‘Suzume’ being it’s beautiful evolution of the neo-soul sound.

'Suzume' will be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats in April 2019 via Jakarta Records and features artwork created by Simone Cihlar (Anderson .Paak, Tom Misch and more).

Mr. Käfer & DDob - Subway Space (2019)

The album "Subway Space" by Mr. Käfer & Ddob comes with laid-back drums, mellow vibes and chilled guitar licks. The two got to know each other in Cologne, where the Austrian Mr. Käfer completed an internship at the music label MPM Records. Both got along very well from the start and worked together on an instrumental album, which they finished shortly afterwards in Austria.
Varying styles from lofi to boombap, the duo brings the right vibe for the upcoming spring season. The spacious and moody instrumental album offers a lot to cover, from surreal moods, that you can hear on "Enter the Void", right up to the moving tunes of "Planetary Nebulae". Listening to "Railways" one overcomes the slightly oppressive feeling of stuffy air that you know from dusty subway tunnels, while "Spherical Colors" lets you flow through musical ionosphere. On "Kamakura" you can hear a great collaboration between the duo and the producer Spaze Windu, which is complemented by gentle vocals from Yana and offers a great combination with the producer's flipped vocal quotes. The track "One For", that also represents the album's single, picks up the vibe and features a couple of scratches from Kiel's local A¢AP Creepy.
