Le Sony'r Ra (1914-1993), known better under the name Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount), was an prolific American jazz composer, synthesizer and piano player, poet and bandleader that was known for his avant-garde and experimental music. During his career, he put an emphasis on “cosmic” philosophy and theatrical performances, in which is most prominent in his group, the Sun Ra Arkestra. Known for his eclectic and ever-changing jazz style, he would range from sub-styles of ragtime and bebop to fusion and free jazz. Though he had limited mainstream success, he continued to be a frequent recording artist and live performer throughout life. He was as innovative and influential as he was controversial, and his discography of over 1000 tracks continues to speak for itself. Among his distinctions are his pioneering work in free and modal jazz and usage of synthesizers and electronic keyboards. SPACE IS THE PLACE!
Gregory Shorter Jr. (1978-2019), better known by his stage name Ras G, was an American record producer and DJ from Los Angeles, California. He was leader of the Afrikan Space Program, a co-founder of the Poo-Bah Records label, was associated with Brainfeeder, as well as releasing over 30 albums and mixtapes via Leaving Records, Stones Throw, Fat Beats, All-City Records, Akashik, Dublab, Hit+Run and his own Ghetto Sci-Fi imprint, amongst many others since his debut in 2008. Ras G became known for his extensive crate-digging and ability to conjure cosmic atmospheres with his beats, typically with an outer space theme. After coming to prominence in the late-2000s, Ras G maintained a constant artistic pace, often releasing multiple albums per year. ASP FOREVER!

Beats by Jan began as a troll post on social media about a fake beat tape. And now, life imitates art: he made an actual Beats by Jan tape, soon to be released on cassette via Greek boutique label Nekubi Tapes.
And it’s a nice one. With most notably “The Silver Beat Matter,” a short story in the style of a 40s detective radio show molded into a beat.

And here we are – the end of another year of Herring fillets. To celebrate we have an EP of 6 unreleased joints from IBM Nation member Mac G outta Philadelphia. Hardcore collectors will know IBM Nation from their 1990 grail the Brainiac EP which dropped on small indie label Inner City Recs back in the deezy. Unfortunately Mac G had a couple of his crazy nice solo demo tapes stolen from his studio by a shady acquaintance. Those tapes appeared on Ebay shortly afterwards and sold for crazy loot [2k+]. We’re hoping that one day the new owner of those 1992 – 1994 demo tapes will hit us up to share them with the fans, on a limited vinyl Herring release. But what we do have here are his extra dope unreleased mid 90’s demos. Peep the snippets and we’ll be back 1st week of January with the final vinyl release of the Dec/Jan Cycle as well as 4 new CD releases. Props for supporting the Herring in 2019 – we have some sureshots already lined up for 2020, the 20th year of the Herring!!!

Testiculo Y Uno are Hulk Hodn and Twit One, two producers from Cologne, Germany. In 2009 they produced the first volume of the ground-breaking Hi-Hat Club series that kicked off the careers of beatmakers like Suff Daddy, Dexter and Brenk Sinatra.

Like many debut albums, it is full of ideas, influences and one can basically hear how much work and love was involved in creating this lofi hiphop gold.

Moka Only - Martian 2019 (2019)

Moka Only has brought his Martian Xmas series back for another winter season. This time around, you may notice the absence of the ‘xmas’ abbreviation. Moka felt that many potential listeners may have had an aversion to the Martian album series due to their perception of it being traditional holiday material. That being said, the wiser would know that despite the odd reference to the holidays, Martian Xmas has always been more of a winter themed affair. It is intended to be enjoyed well past Anglo-traditional confines, that of which the author has never prescribed to in the first place. On this go ‘round we find a distinct nod to the Martians of 2009-2010 wherein some of the fragmentation and splintered track styles have returned. Repeated motifs of the Bunkers, Hank Hill, and obscure British comedy outtakes are well represented here, as well as the ‘Martian ubiquitous’ statement of “Also German “ still pop up.
I am not certain of the significance of the former, but I’ll admit it does add to the mystery of it all. The customs are what seem to bring the core listeners back year after year. Aside from the obvious sprinklings of customary absurdity, we have newly explored territory throughout this voyage. ‘I Rock Ties’ harkens back to classic east coast jazz poetry with its odd vocal ‘cool pocket’, and it’s somewhat jarring 5/4-time signature. ‘Mood Lights’ essentially takes us into inner/outer space with freeform musings over an indiscernible tapestry of noise, only to abruptly end with a baffling narrative coda resting uncomfortably on a 70s psyche rock track bed. This concoction is repeated on ‘Machine Wrapped with Butter’. Pieces like these feel at home on a Martian Xmas outing. ‘Start up the Emax’ references a line from the classic 90s North Carolina based group Yaggfu Front.
Guests DavePsy and Mr. Brady respectively appear on ‘Have a Ball’ and ‘And Again’, ensuring that Moka’s Torchlight Commission crew is well represented. The album’s closer ‘Like Yeah’ wraps it all up with a ‘Naughty’ sort of vibe (you’ll see what I did there). In conclusion, I firmly feel Moka has recaptured what us true heads have loved most about the Martian series. The Jazz element throughout the record, really cements all aspects into one cohesive, juicy whole. This one will keep you jazzing for a long time to come.
