NBN Archives is proud to debut a forthcoming series of Hip-Hop and R’n’B reissues with a little known Californian project from "108" a short lived Bay Area group which consisted of rappers Encore (Shaya Bekele) and Grand The Visitor (Everett Aknowledge) along with composer-producer Sedric Edwards. Originally released in 1996 in a very limited quantity of one hundred CD's, the album "Mission Infinite" never really got the attention it deserved until now.

By the mid 90s Encore and Grand had already been gravitating around the San Jose Hip-Hop scene, releasing music in connection with Bay Area Hip- Hop Icon Peanut Butter Wolf - both featuring on one of Wolf’s first 12’s “Step On Our Ego's?” (1996, South Paw Records). In the same year, Grand released his first solo single “The Visitor” on Blind Side Recordings produced by PB Wolf and Encore's first single was one of the very first releases on Stones Throw in 1997. Sedric Edwards was a sound engineer working locally when he met Chris Cut (aka PB Wolf). They set up a studio together where he met the two MC’s. According to Encore: "One day, Sedric was playing some of his Jazz-infused instrumentals in between sessions, and we were like: ‘We should try something with this!’” 

Working with Sedric’s simple homestudio set-up and with local musicians adding instrumentation to his bass playing, they managed to achieve a "live feel" on the album. Released upon completion via Wake Up Records, the LP was promoted with a couple of shows in small clubs around the San Jose area - where most of the CD's were sold. However without distribution or promotion the record fizzled out. It remains a mystery up until today how this album remained so slept-on for over two decades.

At a time when rapping over live instrumentation was not very common, a style popularized by bands like The Roots, the 108 project truly stands out amongst other Hip-Hop releases of that era. NBN Archives is extremely proud to present this 90's Hip-Hop underground masterpiece, remastered from the original DAT tapes, for the Jazzy Hip-Hop Aficionados.

About Dust&Loops Anthology:

The Dust&Loops project is about the sparkle found in the primal aspect of producing Hip-Hop, and the idea of embracing mistakes as opportunities. Encapsulating the raw and rugged but ever flowing art form of east coast skateboarding is no easy feat, but with this new beat tape Ewonee does just that. With this one he taps into his past experiences skateboarding in NYC when he was a little younger. Those experiences that he had also made him want to dig deeper into east coast skateboarding and its synonymous relationship with Hip-Hop. Especially in the 90s and early 2000s skateboarding and Hip-Hop were very closely seen in pop culture, like in the Larry Clark flim KIDS and in various skateboarding videos like the Zoo York Mixtape. East Coast skateboarding unlike its counterpart in the west is a little more rough around the edges, and style takes the front seat over what trick you're doing and how big the obstacle you're jumping off is. All those thing combined helped me craft this album and frankly made the perfect source of inspiration. Hope you enjoy it.

"Boulevard of Dreams" is Beamic's second solo album after "Zwischen Tür und Angel" (Krekpek Records / Vinyl Digital, 2017). The consistently instrumental long player leads the listener on a journey through melodious songs with a lot of samples and a beautiful arrangement, which bends strongly the typical song structure, to let the listener drift off into curious worlds of euphonious sample collages. But Beamic does not break with the typical elements of Boombap, so crunchy drums find their way in as well as dope samples and basslines that make one's legs shake. According to Beamic's own words, "Boulevard of Dreams is about breaking self-built walls and not just working with the same formula over and over again".

Represented on the album are longtime friend and fellow artist snaer. as well as Oskar Hahn, with whom he released the jazz-oriented album "Stratosphere I" (Vinyl Digital / Durch Drauf Records) in 2018.

Tokyo's own beat maker and multi-instrumentalist, Kazumi Kaneda, brings us another Jazz opus full of dazzle and wonder. Following up his 2017’s album Hardlight, Morpheme Tone sets a new bar in original jazz & hip hop production, continually refining his particular flavour and style. Kaneda presents his work as gritty and complex, smooth and subtle with equal parts bebop and hip hop, coalescing into a project of ultimate coolness.

Bring The Noise, classic hip hop tracks from the vaults of Noiseman, Confidence and Sensei Walingh. Sound the alarm, golden era hip hop instrumentals served up fresh. Most of the beats were produced on an Akai S1100, MPC 1000, or MPC 2000XL. These divers styles in hip hop music showcase the boom bap influence and use of vinyl records. Refining his style in the early 90’s, incorporating abstract sounds in his tracks, Noiseman earned his tag by musically adding noise to his production. Nacrobats Is truly what Chicago underground Hip-Hop in the 90’s was about dope beats, bars, and sounding unique. Following in the footsteps of Common, All Natural and The Molemen. The Nacrobats became an institution for upcoming rappers, producers, dancers, artist, and party promoters of the time. Their DIY aesthetic and over 40+ releases (solo and as a collective) have laid the ground work for many artists there today.
